FAQ'S

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Like other allergy blood tests, the UM Diagnostics Dog and Cat Allergy Test can determine if you are sensitive to dog and cat allergens. But our test goes a step further. If you are found to be sensitized to cat or dog allergens, additional testing is automatically included at no extra cost to pinpoint the exact proteins within each allergen causing your symptoms.

This in-depth analysis of allergen proteins is called component testing and provides a much clearer understanding of your allergen sensitivities. For instance, some people are allergic to unneutered male dogs but not female or neutered dogs, which can only be determined by examining these specific proteins. This detailed information can help you select the right pet and work with your healthcare provider to create an effective allergy management plan.

Individuals with a dog or cat allergy are sensitive to one or more allergens found in the animals’ dander, saliva, and urine. If you have a pet allergy, you may experience allergy symptoms when exposed to pet allergens.

If you’re sensitized to dog or cat allergens, you may be experiencing the following: More serious cases can trigger breathing difficulties and asthma attacks that can result in an emergency room visit.

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Facial pain (from nasal congestion)
  • Coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing
  • Watery, red or itchy eyes
  • Skin rash or hives
Remember, this is not medical advice, and it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for any health concerns.

This IgE blood test helps determine if you’re sensitive to dog or cat allergens. Your healthcare provider can use these results to understand if your symptoms might be caused by allergies to these pets.

Your test results will show your IgE antibody level to the allergens tested on a scale from negative to very high (numbers ranging from <0.10 to >100).

No detectable IgE antibodies (negative, <0.10) or a low level (0.10 to 0.31) suggests you’re unlikely allergic to that allergen.
Higher IgE levels generally indicate an allergy, often with more severe symptoms when exposed to the allergen.
If you’re sensitized to these allergens, the test results will also identify the specific proteins causing the allergy.

Share your results with your healthcare provider or allergist to create an allergy management plan and find ways to avoid exposure to the allergen.
